Steam Powered Men Shoot The Moon

Steam Powered Men Shoot The Moon 9:00 pm Thursday, March 27, 2008 I meant to write about this last week but it slipped my mind until the books arrived yesterday. John Halbo at Crooked Timber has done the world a great favor and brought two lost classics of 19th century science fiction back from the heat death of obscurity: Edward E. Hale??s The Brick Moon and The Huge Hunter, Or Steam Man of the Prairies by Edward Ellis.* Both are cheep as hell and available for free download or in print, from

Texas 1842

At the end of February, 1842, Caleb Ives, Episcopal priest of Christ Church Matagorda Texas, recorded in his journal yet another entry reflecting his deepest concern that his preaching of the gospel of Christ be blessed by God, leading to the salvation of his parishioners and to his own sanctification. His next entry, for March 3rd, simply commented on the prospect of a Mexican attack in south Texas, in response to reported communications from San Antonio and Gonzales. On this date and others i

Maladies & Treatments: Native American Medicine

By Jennifer Mueller When Europeans came across the New World, they were presented with an entire new system of healing: new plants and new people who had devised new methods to use them. Some of the plants were familiar. Willow, for instance, grows in the Old World and the New and is the basis of the modern aspirin. Others, completely unknown, would soon appear in the settlers' medicine chests, so to speak, alongside their old favorites from home. While many Native American families would hav

More Texiana and Chisholm Trailing

More western ranching and cattle-trailing trivia, for your weekend delectation. part one is here The classical free-range cattle-ranching and long-trail-drive west actually only lasted for about twenty years, from the end of the Civil War to the mid-1880s when bad weather and a glutted market spelled the end of those ways. The cattle-towns depicted in western movies actually were limited to a very small time and space: Kansas, the terminus for those long drives from Texas, as the railroads

Last Week in Review

Thanks to all my readers and friends who have wished me good health during this last week as I suffered with flu or bronchitis or something. If I had been well, last night I would have attended the Virginia Press Association Awards, where I would have received two third places for my work with the local paper. I am sorry to have missed the celebration. I am on the mend, but today will be another quiet day of healing. I spent most of the recent week in bed, feeling too poorly even to read, tha

Imagine my surprise when I read that Ion the TV network that used to be PAX is going to start showing Westerns every Saturday night, starting with tonight??s ACES ???N EIGHTS. Naturally, I watched it. The plot, about the railroad trying to steal land from the settlers, had more whiskers than Gabby Hayes, but the movie has a few things to recommend it.
